On a busy day for India at the World Para Athletics Championships here on Tuesday, reigning Paralympic champion Sumit Antil successfully defended his F64 javelin throw world title. Thangavelu Mariyappan and Ekta Bhyan also won gold in their respective high jump and club throw events.

Antil, the gold medallist from the 2023 World Para Athletics Championships and the Tokyo Paralympics, launched his spear 69.50 metres to the top of the podium.

Sandeep, a fellow countryman, threw 60.41 metres to win the bronze medal in the same event.

Silver medallist Thangavelu went on to win gold in the T63 high jump, setting a championship record with a leap of 1.88 metres.

In the women’s F51 club throw competition, Ekta won gold with a season-best throw of 20.12 metres, while Kashish Lakra brought home silver with a throw of 14.56 metres. With a score of 12.70 metres, Algerian Nadjet Boucherf took home the bronze.

At the Asian Para Games in China, Ekta, an officer in the Haryana Civil Services (HCS), took home a bronze medal.

After being chosen as an HCS officer by the Haryana government, the 38-year-old took up sports. She also won a gold medal in the club throw event at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta. She has also earned a spot in the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.
