Fans of Oz Perkins and Stephen King, take note. The Monkey, directed by Perkins and based on Stephen King’s beloved short story of the same name, will open on NEON on the designated day. The new release date for the adaptation is February 21, 2025, in theatres.

The movie won’t face any significant direct competition on that day. As of right now, Lionsgate’s drama The Unbreakable Boy is the only other film scheduled to open opposite it. Even though Perkins recently referred to The Monkey as a kind of family film, it seems reasonable to argue that the film is aimed at a distinct demographic. What’s the plot of the aforementioned movie?

Skeleton Crew, King’s collection of short stories, was published in 1985 and contained this story. The adaptation’s filming was completed in March. Starring Theo James (The White Lotus), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings), Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth), Colin O’Brien (Wonka), Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends), and Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek) among others, the film has an incredibly talented ensemble.

Horror guru James Wan, of Saw and The Conjuring fame, is producing the film alongside Michael Clear, Jason Cloth, Dave Caplan, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Chris Ferguson, which only serves to heighten the mystery surrounding it. Executive producers include John Friedberg, Nancy Xu, Peter Luo, and Fred Berger. Perkins, on the other hand, is fresh off the highly anticipated Longlegs of this year, which was featured on the cover of FANGORIA #24. Other credits for the director include Gretel & Hansel and The Blackcoat’s Daughter.

As always, it’s an excellent moment to be a Stephen King fan. In addition to this film, numerous more adaptations of his writing are being developed at different phases. The eagerly anticipated Salem’s Lot movie will finally debut on Max this year. The Life of Chuck by Mike Flanagan is also available.
