The Crow’s forthcoming remake has been postponed until late summer. Bill Skarsgård plays Eric Draven, the vengeful undead musician made famous by the 1989 James O’Barr comic book limited series of the same name and the original 1994 Alex Proyas movie adapting the story, starring the late Brandon Lee. The film was directed by Rupert Sanders of Snow White and the Huntsman. FKA Twigs as Shelly Webster, Laura Birn, Danny Huston, Sami Bouajila, Isabella Wei, and Jordan Bolger are also part of the cast of the remake.
The Crow’s release date has been rescheduled by over two months, according to Deadline. The film will now open in theatres on August 23 after Lionsgate rescheduled the release dates of several of its upcoming films. Its original release date was June 7, which also happened to be the day that Martin Lawrence and Will Smith’s franchise sequel Bad Boys: Ride or Die was released.
The most recent The Crow movie’s postponed release date isn’t inherently unfavourable. As more and more studios reveal which films they want to release on specific weekends throughout the year, films often reschedule their release dates by a few weeks or months. Numerous considerations were probably taken into account, one of which being the fact that Bad Boys for Life, the previous Bad Boys film, was a huge smash in 2020, suggesting that June 7’s release of its sequel might have presented stiff competition.
The film faces significantly less significant competition on its revised date. The only wide-release films currently slated for that weekend are the Christian drama The Forge and the thriller Blink Twice, neither of which is associated with a comparably potent blockbuster IP. Late August is typically a sluggish month for large releases.
Bill Skarsgård’s major 2024 releases are also stretched out by this new release date. April 26 is the scheduled release date of the rising star’s new action-comedy film Boy Kills World, which carries the risk of flooding the market with Skarsgård automobiles. The Crow’s performance in late August is still to be seen, but delaying the release date might be the wisest course of action for the project.
