The Milwaukee Brewers and the Atlanta Braves began a three-game series on Tuesday night. In this first series encounter, Milwaukee dominated and won spectacularly, 10-0. The following evening, the Brewers defeated the Braves 8-5 after overcoming two separate lead changes in the middle of the inning. The Brewers rebounded from their last series loss to the Braves, winning two of three games away from home.
Milwaukee leads 64–49. They are six games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals in second place in the NL Central division. With a record of 60-53, Atlanta is seven games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the top spot in the NL East. The Brewers will play the Reds once this series ends, and the Braves will play the Rockies.
Milwaukee Brewers Delightful 8-5 Win Over the Braves
Braves third baseman Austin Riley drove an RBI double into the gap in left centre field two hitters into the bottom of the first inning, giving Atlanta the lead. First baseman Matt Olson blasted a sacrifice fly two batters later. Third baseman Joey Ortiz hit an RBI double down the right-field line to give Milwaukee a lead in the top of the third inning. In the top of the fifth inning, Ortiz hit an RBI single to left field to tie the score at two. Milwaukee took the lead in the following at-bat when centre fielder Blake Perkins hit an RBI single to right field.
Braves Take Another Lead, but the Brewers Come Back!
After a disagreement with the ump on a strike call against Jorge Soler, the recently acquired right fielder for the Braves, Braves manager Brian Snitker was removed from the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Riley gave Atlanta a 4-3 lead after hitting a two-run home ball to the centre field only one batter later. In the top of the sixth inning, Brewers catcher Gary Sanchez hit an RBI single to left field to tie the score at four. Blake Perkins hit a two-run single to centre field after four batters.
In the top of the eighth inning, Joey Ortiz increased Milwaukee’s advantage with another RBI double, this one down the left field line. Andruw Monasterio, the second baseman, drove in two runs two batters later to give Milwaukee an 8-4 lead and the victory.
Top Performers from the Brewers 8-5 Win
Freddy Peralta, the starting pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers, struck out six batters in five innings despite giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks. In the victory, Joey Ortiz went three for four with two RBIs while centre fielder Blake Perkins went three for five with three RBIs. Starting pitcher Chris Sale of the Atlanta Braves struck out ten batters in four and a third innings while giving up two runs on nine hits and two walks. In the defeat, Austin Riley batted two for four and drove in three runs.
