The Dimensity 9400, MediaTek’s latest flagship chip, marks a significant milestone in the Android ecosystem.
The new CPU is the first of its kind to be created using TSMC’s second-generation 3nm technology, known as N3E.
The new production method results in a significant increase in power efficiency over the predecessor.
It boasts 40% improved power efficiency
The Dimensity 9400 is a significant boost from last year’s 4nm Dimensity 9300, offering a startling 40% increase in power efficiency. This is primarily due to TSMC’s sophisticated N3E technology used in production.
However, it is worth noting that, while this is a first for Android chips, Apple debuted the A17 Pro CPU utilising the same approach a year ago.
A departure from traditional chip design
The Dimensity 9400 deviates from the norm of chip architecture by featuring eight “big” cores, a move intended to improve performance during demanding activities.
This “All Big Core” design includes one prime Cortex-X925 core running at 3.62GHz, three Cortex-X4 cores, and four Cortex-A720 cores.
Despite its unorthodox architecture, MediaTek explained that this design strikes a balance between peak performance and power economy.
It outperforms its predecessor in benchmark tests.
In benchmark tests, the Dimensity 9400 demonstrated a significant performance increase over its predecessor.
It scored 3,055 on Geekbench 6.2’s single-core test and 9,600 on its multi-core version, representing 35% and 28% increases over the previous model.
These results also outperformed those achieved by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon CPU on Samsung’s S24 Ultra smartphone.
Dimensity 9400 supports advanced display and AI features
The Dimensity 9400 also includes ARM’s newest 12-core Immortalis-G925 GPU, which MediaTek claims provides an additional 40% performance improvement.
The CPU supports WQHD+ resolutions at an astounding 180Hz refresh rate and works with tri-fold screens like the one on the Huawei Mate XT.
It also houses MediaTek’s own eighth-generation NPU, which is used to train some types of lightweight AI models on the device.
