Kwikset’s new smart lock, the Halo Select, marks the company’s first major release in five years and brings a host of updated features, a refined design, and flexible connectivity options. The Halo Select supports the Matter smart home standard, operating over the low-power Thread network, but also allows users to connect via Wi-Fi, making it a versatile option for different needs. This dual-compatibility is a thoughtful move, letting buyers enjoy smart lock functionality now with Wi-Fi while keeping future compatibility with Matter in mind.

According to Kwikset’s product manager, Charles Dougherty, the company took its time developing the Halo Select to ensure it fit the market’s evolving demands. While Matter support is still limited, the Thread protocol promises improved battery life and better performance, making the lock future-proof. Interestingly, users must start by setting up the lock through the Kwikset app, connecting first to Wi-Fi, and can later switch to Matter via Thread if they prefer.

Priced at $279, the Halo Select is set to release in mid-November. It features a full deadbolt replacement, a touchscreen keypad, and a traditional keyway for physical access. Although it lacks advanced biometric options like fingerprint scanning, the design is noticeably slimmer and more refined compared to previous models. The lock also includes a new status icon that indicates whether the door is locked as you approach.

In terms of performance, Kwikset has upgraded the motor for quieter and more efficient operation. The Halo Select is powered by four AA batteries or an optional lithium-ion pack, with the latter offering extended battery life. Using Wi-Fi, the lock should last six months on standard batteries, or up to nine months with the lithium pack. When using Thread, battery life could extend to 12 months or more.

The Halo Select works with popular smart home platforms like Alexa and Google Home, enabling voice control and automation. However, if you opt for Matter connectivity, you lose access to Kwikset’s app features, such as passcode management and door alerts, and must rely on the capabilities of your chosen smart home ecosystem. Despite this, the Halo Select’s blend of present-day functionality and future-proof technology makes it an intriguing option for smart home enthusiasts.
