PV Sindhu, an accomplished badminton player and two-time Olympian, will represent India’s women’s badminton team in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal and Sindhu will represent their country in the Summer Games as flag carriers.

Gagan Narang, an Olympian who won a bronze medal in London, will represent India as Chef-de-Mission.

The appointments were confirmed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), whose president, PT Usha, explained that Narang was a given.

“I was looking for an Olympic medallist to lead our contingent and my young colleague is an apt replacement for Mary Kom. I am also delighted to announce that India’s only woman to win two Olympic medals, PV Sindhu, as the female flag-bearer alongside table tennis ace A Sharath Kamal in the opening ceremony,” Usha explained in a media release.

As the person in charge of seeing to the needs and welfare of the competing athletes as well as communicating with the organising committee, the chef-de-mission holds a crucial administrative position.

Although Sharath Kamal’s name was selected in March, the announcement of the female athlete by the IOA was delayed. One male and one female athlete from each participating country will jointly carry the flag during the Olympic opening ceremony, stated International Olympic Committee (IOC) regulations.

Manpreet Singh, the former captain of the Indian hockey team, and Mary Kom carried the flag during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Usha expressed her confidence in the Indian team’s performance at the Paris Olympics in the same press release. “I am confident that our athletes are well prepared to deliver the best results for India in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games,” she explained.

Over a hundred athletes from India will compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris kick off on July 26.
