On August 10, 2024, Telangana’s IT and Industries Minister, D. Sridhar Babu, held discussions with Kerry Person, Vice President of AWS Data Centre Planning and Delivery, in Palo Alto, California. The meeting focused on expanding Amazon Web Services (AWS) operations in Hyderabad, with a particular emphasis on significantly enhancing the company’s data center capabilities and AI services in the region.
AWS plans to expand its cloud infrastructure in Hyderabad as part of its broader strategy for India. During the meeting, Minister Babu successfully persuaded Amazon’s senior leadership to intensify their focus on growing their data center operations in Telangana. The company expressed strong interest in making substantial investments in both its data center facilities and workforce in Hyderabad.
Amazon already has a significant presence in Telangana, including its largest corporate building globally, located in Hyderabad. The company also launched its dedicated air cargo network, Amazon Air, in the city in 2023.
“The AWS has designated Hyderabad as a strategic region, with three major data centers already in operation,” said Minister Babu. “They outlined plans to further grow their business, which includes setting up a new hyper-scale data center in Hyderabad that will play a key role in supporting AI and machine learning-enabled services.”
The discussions with Amazon were described as “extremely positive and successful” by Minister Babu, who assured the corporation of the state’s full support and the provision of the best incentives to achieve their expansion goals in Hyderabad.
Kerry Person expressed excitement about the opportunity to further expand AWS’s cloud infrastructure in Hyderabad, highlighting the city’s role in AWS’s growth strategy in India. He emphasized the importance of the AWS Region in Hyderabad in supporting the growth of cloud services in India, particularly in the realm of Artificial Intelligence.
AWS is committed to contributing to Telangana’s digital ambitions, empowering customers and partners across the state and country to work towards India’s trillion-dollar digital economy goal, according to Mr. Person.
The expansion of AWS’s business in Telangana is expected to further solidify the state’s position as a leading hub for cloud and data center infrastructure in India. Amazon’s range of cloud services, including computing, storage, databases, networking, machine learning, and analytics, will now also encompass AI services. Amazon, headquartered in Washington, D.C., has a market capitalization of over $1.89 trillion and a global workforce exceeding 1.5 million employees.
