Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised D Gukesh as an inspiration for “millions of young minds” after he became the first teenage world champion in chess on Thursday, but India ran out of adjectives to express how much he is loved.

The nation hailed Gukesh’s victory, and the prime minister joined the sports community and others in applauding his amazing feat. Gukesh is eighteen years old.

After defeating Chinese championship holder Ding Liren in a fierce 14th and final game in Singapore, he emerged victorious.

“Historic and exemplary! Congratulations to Gukesh D on his remarkable accomplishment. This is the result of his unparalleled talent, hard work and unwavering determination,” PM Modi wrote on ‘X’.

“His triumph has not only etched his name in the annals of chess history but has also inspired millions of young minds to dream big and pursue excellence. My best wishes for his future endeavours,” he explained.

President Droupadi Murmu explained India is “immensely proud” of Gukesh’s achievement.

“Heartiest congratulations to Gukesh for becoming the youngest player to win the World Chess Championship. He has done India immensely proud. His victory stamps the authority of India as a chess powerhouse. Well done Gukesh! On behalf of every Indian, I wish you sustained glory in the future,” explained the country’s President in a post on X.

Gukesh received accolades for winning something of this size at such a young age from the renowned Viswanathan Anand, who won the title an unprecedented five times.

“It’s a great feat. To become the world champion at the age of 18 is no small feat. It was a great sight to see him celebrating after the win. Hopefully, this will inspire a lot of aspiring players,” Anand explained.

When Gukesh won the title in 1985, he surpassed Garry Kasparov’s record of 22 years, 6 months, and 27 days.

He was referred to as a chess prodigy by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

The nation’s first and only track and field Olympic gold medallist, champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, posted on ‘X’, “Congratulations, Gukesh! The youngest person to ever do it, and the finest in the world. India is proud.

Like PM Modi, India’s first individual Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra explained Gukesh has inspired a generation to “dream big” with his stunning achievement.

“Congratulations on winning the World Chess Championship, Gukesh! The entire country is proud of your intelligence, tenacity, and poise under duress. In addition to winning a title, you have motivated a generation to pursue their dreams.

Former star cricketer Virender Sehwag explained, “Woww, you beauty Gukesh. At just 18, Gukesh Dommaraju becomes the youngest World Chess Champion ever. A great moment for us all and you are an inspiration, Gukesh.”

“We have a new world champion!” tweeted the International Chess Federation (FIDE). Congratulations, Gukesh D.

It completes an incredible year for Gukesh, who also took home the Chess Olympiad and the Candidates 2024 event.
