Hyundai is making significant strides in the realm of alternative mobility solutions with its adoption of twin-cylinder CNG technology, a move reminiscent of Tata Altroz iCNG’s debut. Branded as Hy-CNG Duo, this innovation marks Hyundai’s entry into a new era of CNG powertrains, enhancing appeal and attractiveness for prospective buyers.
The Hyundai Exter Hy-CNG Duo was recently launched, heralding the company’s expansion into twin-cylinder CNG technology. Interestingly, Hyundai plans to maintain both single-cylinder and twin-cylinder CNG variants in its lineup. Currently, the Exter Hy-CNG Duo is the sole vehicle featuring this technology, with potential future implementations in models like the Grand i10 NIOS and Aura.
Prices for the Exter Hy-CNG Duo start at Rs 8.5 lakh (Ex-showroom). The lineup includes variants such as the S Hy-CNG Duo, SX Hy-CNG Duo (priced at Rs 9.23 lakh, Ex-showroom), and SX Knight Hy-CNG Duo (priced at Rs 9.38 lakh, Ex-showroom). All models are equipped with a 1.2-liter 4-cylinder NA petrol bi-fuel engine paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, boasting ARAI-tested fuel efficiency of up to 27.1 km/kg.
The twin-cylinder setup allows for a substantial increase in practicality, optimizing boot space without compromising on aesthetics. Unlike traditional setups, the neatly integrated CNG cylinders blend seamlessly with the vehicle’s design, enhancing its appeal and usability. This enhancement not only maximizes usable space but also positions CNG fuel as a viable alternative to diesel.
Regarding operational details, Hyundai’s Exter Hy-CNG Duo features an integrated electronic control unit ensuring smooth transitions between petrol and CNG modes, though specifics on starting the engine on CNG were not detailed in the release. This technological advancement positions the Exter in direct competition with Tata Punch i-CNG (twin-cylinder) models, which start at Rs 7.23 lakh (Ex-showroom).
Mr. Tarun Garg from Hyundai Motor India Limited expressed enthusiasm about the launch, emphasizing the company’s commitment to sustainable and innovative mobility solutions. He highlighted the Exter Hy-CNG Duo’s attributes such as high fuel efficiency, ample boot space, and versatility, catering to customers seeking reliable vehicles that reduce carbon footprint while facilitating exploration.
Hyundai’s foray into twin-cylinder CNG technology with the Exter Hy-CNG Duo marks a significant leap towards more sustainable and efficient driving options, promising a compelling choice in the competitive SUV market segment.
