On Sunday, Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the first gold medal for Ukraine at the European Athletics Championships in Rome.
The world champion led a Ukrainian one-two with bronze going to Iryna Gerashchenko after clearing 2.01 metres to win the high jump championship. Before the Olympics in Paris, Mahuchikh, who escaped the Russian bombardment of her city of Dnipro in 2023, maintained her excellent form.
Dina Asher-Smith won the gold medal in the 100 metres at Europe with a time of 10.99 seconds. In a close race, Italy’s Zaynab Dosso and Poland’s Ewa Swoboda completed the podium.
Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki produced an incredible 80.95-meter effort in the thrilling men’s hammer throw final, trying to overtake Hungary’s Bence Halasz and Ukraine’s Mykhaylo Kokhan.
With a triple leap of 14.85 metres, Ana Peleteiro-Compaore of Spain won hands-down, and Tugba Danismaz of Turkey set a new national record with a jump of 14.57 metres for silver. After Alice Finot, the first winner of the 3000m steeplechase, was disqualified for a lane violation, German Gesa Krause emerged victorious. In a tough 800-meter race, Frenchman Gabriel Tual prevailed in 1:44.87.
Ireland’s second gold was won by Ciara Mageean, who finished the 1500 metres in 4:04.66, faster than Georgia Bell of Britain. The men’s 4×400-meter relay team and Agathe Guillemot (1500-meter) both brought home bronze medals for French athletes. With the championships over, everyone’s attention is focused on the Olympics in Paris.
