The season of Dejounte Murray is gone.
After sustaining a non-contact injury during the first quarter of the Pelicans’ 118-116 loss to the Celtics on Friday night, ESPN’s Shams Charania claimed that the former All-Star guard tore his Achilles.
Murray will now miss the rest of the 2024–25 season, which has been difficult for the Pelicans, who are 12-37 and have struggled with a number of ailments. Murray missed the 2018–19 season because of a ruptured ACL.
Murray, who has already missed almost 20 games this season due to a broken hand sustained on opening night that kept him out for weeks, had averaging 17.9 points, 7.6 assists, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.1 steals going into Friday.
Medical personnel hurried to the court as soon as he sustained the non-contact injury, and he was immediately declared out for the remainder of the match.
After the game, Pelicans head coach Willie Green told reporters, “It’s really tough to watch a guy who works hard and means a lot to our team go down like that.”
Trey Murphy III, a rising wing who finished with 40 points and eight 3-pointers in the defeat, added, “I can’t lie to you, it hurt a lot.” It doesn’t help that he’s already been through so much. However, God frequently uses adversity to teach you a more important lesson. That’s what I believe is going on at the moment. He always has a rationale for what he says, even if it’s not always clear.
Given how much the Pelicans depend on Murray’s spectacular playmaking and defensive presence on the perimeter, this injury is predicted to keep him out of action for at least many months.
Brandon Ingram, Herb Jones, and Zion Williamson have already missed time for the Pelicans.
This season, the Pels have also lost players like Jose Alvarado, Murphy III, Jordan Hawkins, and CJ McCollum.
The Celtics took advantage of the momentum following the Pelicans’ early loss to Murray.
