Despite not making it to the postseason, Ja’Marr Chase joined a select group of wide receivers on Sunday night.

The star of the Cincinnati Bengals became only the sixth wide receiver to earn the triple crown during the Super Bowl era. Chase set career highs at the end of the season with 1,708 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns on 127 grabs. In addition, he was targeted 175 times and averaged 100.5 yards per game.

“It says I’m off to a tremendous start,” Chase explained on the NFL Network on Saturday when asked about the award. “There’s more to be done, but I’m doing good so far.”

Chase is the only receiver to accomplish that since Cooper Kupp of the Los Angeles Rams did so in 2021. The others are Lance Alworth (1966), Jerry Rice (1990), Sterling Sharpe (1992), and Steve Smith (2005). In addition to being the youngest player in league history to win the triple championship, Chase is 24 years old.

Prior to Saturday’s regular-season finale, Chase was very certain that he would be the first Bengals player to lead the league in all three categories. He had eight more catches than Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, and he had four more touchdowns than both St. Brown and Terry McLaurin of the Washington Commanders. Prior to Week 18, Justin Jefferson, a wide receiver with the Minnesota Vikings, had 133 receiving yards, although he was closest.

Chase almost missed breaking the franchise mark set by Carl Pickens for the most receiving touchdowns in a single season. He only brought home one after needing two in Saturday’s 19–17 victory over the Steelers. In the other two categories, he is the franchise’s leader. With a 9-8 record at the end of the season, the Bengals missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
