By integrating Gemini into its Google Assistant voice-control system, Alphabet Inc.’s consumer team will provide an AI boost for TV sets using its Google TV operating system.
The business demonstrated its updated Google TV software, which includes deeper YouTube integration, better content search, and more natural voice commands, at the CES technology convention on Monday.
Google demonstrated to reporters that the Gemini update, which is scheduled to be released later this year, will enable users to have back-and-forth conversations with third-party TVs without having to use the “Hey Google” trigger word for every command. The business also demonstrated how content may be called up more naturally, for example, by requesting movies from a recent trip that were stored in a user’s Google Photos account.
After introducing some of that capabilities on its first-party streaming box last year, Google is now bringing Gemini to third-party TV sets running its OS for the first time, including those made by Sony Group Corp., Hisense Home Appliances Group Co., and TCL Technology Group Corp. Other significant television operating systems, such as those from Samsung Electronics Co., Amazon.com Inc., and Roku Inc., compete with the company’s Google TV platform.
A new “always-on” mode for a line of TVs that utilise sensors to detect when a user is approaching and display information they might find helpful was also leaked by Google. For example, when someone is near their TV, the system may display personalised news, weather predictions, and other content. The first manufacturer to offer this always-on mode will be TCL in late 2025, with Hisense following in 2026.
