India Yamaha Motor has reached a remarkable milestone with its highly successful entry-level supersport motorcycle, the R15, surpassing the production mark of one million units. Since its initial launch, the R15 has been a game-changer in the segment. Manufactured at Yamaha’s Surajpur plant in Uttar Pradesh, an impressive 90 per cent of the total units produced have been sold in the Indian market, cementing its popularity among motorcycle enthusiasts.
For over 16 years, the Yamaha R15 has stood as a dominant force in its category. Originally introduced in 2008, this bike reshaped the entry-level performance motorcycling scene with innovations such as a liquid-cooled engine, the advanced DiASil Cylinder, and the rigid yet lightweight Deltabox frame. Over the years, Yamaha continued to refine the R15, launching improved versions like the R15 V2.0 in 2011 and the R15 S, which brought additional enhancements to its performance and comfort.
In 2018, the arrival of the R15 V3 marked another breakthrough with the introduction of Variable Valve Actuation (VVA), an assist and slipper clutch, as well as modern LED lighting. The evolution continued in 2021 with the R15 V4, which further elevated the riding experience by incorporating traction control, a quick shifter, and improved aerodynamic efficiency. Currently, the base model of the R15 is priced at Rs. 1.84 lakh, with the top-tier R15 M Carbon Fibre trim reaching Rs. 2.11 lakh (ex-showroom).
Speaking on this significant achievement, Itaru Otani, Chairman of India Yamaha Motor Group of Companies, expressed gratitude to customers and employees, emphasizing the R15’s embodiment of Yamaha’s racing DNA. He highlighted how each generation of the R15 has pushed the boundaries of performance and innovation, solidifying its status as the preferred choice for young riders passionate about speed and technology.
Powering the Yamaha R15 is a four-valve, 155 cc single-cylinder SOHC engine capable of delivering a peak power output of 18.4 PS and a torque of 14.2 Nm. This engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox, featuring an assist and slipper clutch as standard. The motorcycle comes equipped with advanced features, including a traction control system, upside-down front forks for improved handling, and a linked-type monocross rear suspension for enhanced stability.
The R15M variant takes things a step further with premium additions such as a quick shifter for seamless gear shifts, a fully digital colour TFT display with turn-by-turn navigation, music and volume controls, and all-LED lighting, including an LED license plate light. With these continuous innovations, the R15 remains an iconic model in Yamaha’s lineup, appealing to riders who crave an exhilarating riding experience combined with cutting-edge technology.
