When Google introduced the Pixel Buds Pro in 2022, they quickly became the brand’s top-tier earbuds. Despite their high price, they initially lacked key features like spatial audio. Now, over two years later, Google has released a second-generation version of its noise-canceling Pro earbuds, entirely redesigned from the inside out. Notably, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are the first Google earbuds to include a Tensor chip.

Aesthetically, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 resemble their predecessors, retaining the circular touch panel on the exterior, which bears Google’s signature “G” logo. However, the rest of the design has been refined for improved comfort and fit, using insights from “45 million data points from ear scans.” These new earbuds are 27% smaller than the original Pixel Buds Pro and are 1.5 grams lighter. Additionally, Google has introduced a “twist-to-adjust stabilizer” to ensure the earbuds remain securely in place.

Internally, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are powered by the Tensor A1 chip, which handles audio processing and integrates Google AI. According to Google, this chip processes sound at a speed “90 times faster than the speed of sound,” enabling the earbuds to adapt quickly to changes in fit and surroundings. The chip also enhances the earbuds’ active noise cancellation (ANC), which now blocks twice as much noise as before. The updated ANC, named Silent Seal 2.0, adjusts to changes at a rate of three million times per second, and it can now block a wider range of frequencies, including higher-pitched sounds.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 also feature Google’s Gemini AI. Gemini Live allows users to engage in conversations with Google’s AI technology through the earbuds. This interaction, intended to be more natural than previous Google Assistant functions, allows for activities such as practicing interview questions or brainstorming ideas on the go. To activate this feature, users simply say, “Hey Google, let’s talk live.”

Regarding sound quality, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are equipped with 11mm drivers, which deliver “powerful bass” and “smooth treble.” Google has designed these earbuds with multi-path signals, ensuring that audio processing and music playback don’t interfere with each other. They also support spatial audio with head tracking when paired with a Pixel Tablet or a Pixel 6 and newer devices.

Google has also focused on enhancing call quality with the Pixel Buds Pro 2, utilizing Clear Calling technology to minimize background noise for the person on the other end, regardless of the device they’re using. The earbuds also include a Conversation Detection feature that automatically pauses music and activates transparency mode when it detects the wearer speaking. Additional features include compatibility with the Find My Devices network, automatic switching between Pixel devices, Bluetooth LE audio, auto-pause, and a wireless charging case. In terms of battery life, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 offer up to eight hours with ANC on and 12 hours with it off—an improvement of one hour over the original Pixel Buds Pro.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 will be available in four colors: Porcelain (tan), Hazel (gray), Wintergreen (green), and Peony (pink). Priced at $229, they are once again Google’s most expensive earbuds. Pre-orders are now open, with availability beginning on September 26.
