On Thursday, August 8, 2024, OpenAI announced that it is extending the capabilities of its AI image generator, DALL-E 3, to users of the free tier of ChatGPT. Previously available exclusively to ChatGPT Plus subscribers since its introduction as an extension last September, free users can now generate up to two images daily using the model.
In an announcement on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI stated, “We’re rolling out the ability for ChatGPT Free users to create up to two images per day with DALL-E 3. Simply ask ChatGPT to illustrate a concept for a slide presentation, add a friend’s name to a greeting card, or provide a preview of an item. This addition increases ChatGPT’s adaptability by enabling users to request the generation of images for a variety of uses.
DALL-E 3 comes equipped with notable enhancements, one of which is its ability to suggest prompts that aid in image creation. This feature simplifies the process for users who may be uncertain about how to articulate their visual requests effectively.
In tandem with this rollout, OpenAI has also published its GPT-4o System Card, a comprehensive research document that delves into the potential risks and safety considerations associated with the model. The assessment categorizes the overall risk level of GPT-4o as “medium,” evaluating factors such as cybersecurity vulnerabilities, biological threats, persuasive capabilities, and model autonomy. Notably, the model exhibited a “high” risk level in the domain of persuasion, demonstrating an ability to generate text that more effectively sways reader opinions compared to human-written content.
This is not OpenAI’s inaugural endeavor into transparency regarding safety evaluations; similar reports have been released for GPT-4, GPT-4 with vision, and DALL-E 3. These efforts signify the company’s commitment to openness about its safety protocols, especially in the face of ongoing scrutiny and criticism.
Moreover, in July, whispers emerged about a clandestine project within OpenAI, code-named ‘Strawberry,’ though details remained scarce. On Wednesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appeared to subtly acknowledge this project by sharing an image of strawberries from his garden on X, hinting at developments that may be on the horizon.
Through these initiatives, OpenAI continues to expand access to its AI technologies while simultaneously engaging in self-assessment and public discourse about the implications and responsibilities of artificial intelligence development.
