According to Wikipedia, social media refers to interactive computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation or sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. The most common social media platforms used in businesses include: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Snapchat Instagram and even Pinterest.
In order to understand how social media is helping small business grow, we first need to understand what a small business is. Wikipedia defines a small business as a privately owned corporation, partnership, or sole proprietorship that has fewer employees and/or less annual revenue than a regular-sized business or corporation. We reached out to Digital Marketer Jiten Thakkar who has been vocal about how social media can and is helping small business grow and overcome hurdles.
Jiten says “With the small taskforce and smaller revenue, small businesses still have to get out there , sell their products, compete with the big and established businesses and even strive to grow into a bigger business. This is where the social media platforms come in handy. “
He adds that social media has provided a communication avenue for small businesses. Businesses can now communicate directly with their regular clients and potential clients without having to travel physically to their location. This saves on travel costs and time. Money and time are two very essential commodities for the growth of any business. Social media platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn are very basic tools in connecting business to their clients as communication tools.
For any business to thrive, they need to understand their market well. They need to understand who their client or consumer is and what exactly does the consumer want from the product or service that the business is offering. Different social media platforms have proved useful in providing statistics such as ‘consumer wants and needs’. Through interactive platforms like Twitter and Facebook, different small businesses are able to get statistical information based on what a good number of people want and are looking for. This way, the business can make their products available or more suitable to the targeted market.
Social media gives small businesses a platform to display their products and sell them online. This simply means that even without a physical space, a small business can still sell, make profits and even grow right from the social media platforms. Take for instance a person who wants to start a clothing line with a limited amount of capital. There is always the option of investing the little capital you have in making quality designer clothes, taking nice photos, attaching prices to each of the photos and posting in different social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram for sale. ‘With the growth of technology to the extent of electronic payment methods, all one needs for such a business to grow is a good internet connection, a good payment method and a good delivery system’ says Jiten Thakkar.
Social media platforms such as Instagram, YouTube and Facebook are good advertisement platforms that will lead clients to your products or to your physical store. Small businesses can thrive simply by letting people know exactly what they are offering through advertisement and letting them physically seek your products or services.
Small businesses are currently being advised highly to go the social media way in order to get their products out there and grow their business. The use of these platforms is a good chance they get to put their products side by side with those from bigger businesses and to show their expertise in order to sustain their business and even grow their businesses.
