Grok, the AI chatbot developed by xAI, is set to debut as a standalone application for Android users in the near future. Recently, the app was spotted on Google Play, signaling its imminent arrival. While it is not yet available for download, users can now pre-register to gain early access once it officially launches. A beta version was briefly released for select users as part of a testing phase, though the company has yet to announce an official launch date.
Following the release of Grok’s iOS app just a month ago, xAI appears to be preparing for the Android launch. The app’s presence on Google Play was first noticed by tech enthusiasts, with an xAI engineer later confirming the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter). During the beta phase, early access was extended to a limited number of users across several countries, including Australia, Canada, India, the Philippines, and Saudi Arabia. Only the first 1,000 users were able to download and use the app, while others encountered a “coming soon” message, along with an option to pre-register for automatic download upon availability.
The Google Play listing indicates that the app will be free to use, and signing in will not be mandatory. However, those seeking a more tailored experience can opt to link the AI chatbot with their X account. This marks a difference from the web version, which requires users to sign in before accessing Grok’s features.
Upon launch, the standalone app is expected to offer various functionalities, including text-based responses, image generation, and real-time information sourced directly from X. Whether the app will include web-based search capabilities remains uncertain. The AI powering the app will be Grok 2, the same advanced large language model that currently supports both the free and premium web versions.
In the iOS release, users were able to log in using their Apple accounts. However, it remains unclear if the Android version will similarly support login via Google accounts. As anticipation builds, Android users eager to experience Grok’s AI capabilities can secure their spot by pre-registering on Google Play.
