At the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday, December 17, the West Indies women’s team easily defeated the India women’s team by 9 wickets in the second Twenty20 International. Hayley Matthew, the captain of the West Indies, was the star batswoman, taking two wickets and scoring an undefeated 85 off 47 balls to win Player of the Match. West Indies also tied India 1-1 in the three-match T20I series with their 9-wicket victory. Harmanpreet Kaur, India’s regular T20I captain, was unable to play in the second Twenty20 International after sustaining a niggle in her knee while batting in the first. Smriti Mandhana led the women in blue while she was away.
After winning the toss, the West Indies chose to bowl first. After being forced to bat first against the ladies of the West Indies, the Indian women were able to register a competitive total of 159/9. But against the Indian women’s squad, captain Matthews took the lead and struck her first T20I fifty. As the Indian bowlers ran out of ways to restrict the captain of the West Indies, she made them appear foolish. As the West Indies chased down the target of 160 runs in 15.4 overs, Matthews produced an authoritative knock.
The visitors’ chase was set in motion by Matthews and Qiana Joseph’s opening 65-run partnership. Qiana was dismissed, and Campbelle joined Matthews as they easily chased down the target. Of those runs, 55 had come on the powerplay.
IND-W vs WI-W: As it happened
Earlier, India bounced back nicely from a rough start thanks to the offensive efforts of Richa Ghosh and captain Smriti Mandhana. At 48/3 in the ninth over, India was in early difficulty. Uma Chetry (4), Jemimah Rodrigues (13), and debutant Raghvi Bist (5) all left cheaply as the top order faltered. Smriti Mandhana, however, quickly recovered from three missed opportunities to make the West Indies pay for their careless fielding. Mandhana made the most of her good fortune by hitting seven boundaries and one six in a vital 62 off 41 balls.
Richa Ghosh took over when Mandhana was out in the fourteenth over, and he used some forceful hitting to punish the inexperienced West Indies spinners. She scored 17-ball 32, ensuring that India kept up their momentum with her aggressive approach. However, India was unable to achieve an even higher total because of Deandra Dottin’s outstanding penultimate over, which saw Ghosh removed.
The two most impressive bowlers for the West Indies were Deandra Dottin and Chinelle Henry, with captain Hayley Matthews also contributing two wickets.
