In the most recent Power On newsletter from Bloomberg, Mark Gurman speculated that Apple’s Vision Pro would soon support Sony PSVR2 controllers. The collaboration between Apple and Sony was reportedly set to be unveiled weeks ago but has been delayed. If this partnership materializes, Apple could start selling Sony’s PSVR2 controllers, which currently are not available for individual purchase.

Sony has been working for months to ensure compatibility, while Apple has reportedly reached out to third-party developers to explore potential uses for the controllers. This development could be exciting news for Vision Pro users, particularly those interested in enhancing their gaming experience. While Vision Pro offers limited native visionOS gaming options, such as the visually captivating game Thrasher, it lacks substantial gaming content. Adding support for Sony’s controllers could address this gap and potentially make the Vision Pro more appealing to gamers.

Gurman also suggests that Apple envisions uses for the controllers beyond gaming. They might enable more accurate input in high-end programs like Adobe Photoshop and Final Cut Pro, as well as better navigation in visionOS.  At present, users can connect standard Bluetooth controllers to Vision Pro for tasks like selecting items and scrolling via analog sticks, but the functionality is primarily limited to iPhone and iPad games or emulators.

Despite these possibilities, questions remain about whether this partnership can elevate Vision Pro’s gaming potential. Apple has not historically been a major player in attracting game publishers, and the device’s early sales numbers don’t paint a promising picture for widespread adoption. However, the Vision Pro’s unique position as Apple’s first foray into VR technology gives it a distinct edge, and there are indications of demand for advanced controllers, like the Surreal Touch, a fully funded Kickstarter project for controllers modeled around Meta Quest 3.

Whether these developments lead to a richer gaming ecosystem for Vision Pro remains uncertain, but the potential for innovation is undeniable.
