Godzilla Minus One Director Will Debut at Sony in English

Takashi Yamazaki, the filmmaker of Godzilla Minus One, has formally joined forces with Sony Pictures for his next English-language feature picture, Grandgear. In a fierce bidding battle with several studios, Sony was able to secure the project.

Yamazaki is renowned for directing films including Space Battleship Yamato, The Eternal Zero, Stand by Me Doraemon, The Great War of Archimedes, Dragon Quest: Your Story, Lupin III: The First, and Stand by Me Doraemon 2 before gaining widespread acclaim with Godzilla Minus One.

This follows the huge success of Godzilla Minus One in 2023, the first Godzilla movie that was not in English to win an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Yamazaki also wrote and directed the epic period action film. Based on 206 reviews, it presently has an almost flawless Tomatometer score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. It earned over $115 million at the box office globally throughout its duration.
