In a significant change to its production approach, Apple has begun early development of the iPhone 17 base model in India.

Foxconn, Apple’s manufacturing partner, is spearheading the initiative at its Bengaluru site, according to Wayne Ma of The Information.

This action is a “milestone” for Apple’s domestic production efforts.

A strategic move toward cost reduction

In India, the iPhone 17 has already completed the first phase of development.

Apple is assessing if engineers in India can produce iPhone prototypes that are as good as those made in California.

In order to save operational expenses, the tech giant intends to begin developing new iPhone models as soon as feasible in areas near final assembly locations.

iPhone 17: Expected features and specifications

Apple supply chain researcher Jeff Pu has conjectured some potential specifications for the iPhone 17, despite the fact that no new features or modifications have been formally announced.

These consist of an aluminium casing, two back cameras (a 48MP Fusion and a 12MP Ultra Wide), an upgraded 24MP front camera, an A19 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 6.1-inch screen.

Continued reliance on China for premium models

China will continue to serve as the primary development centre for the rumoured ultra-thin iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, even with the shift in basic model manufacture.

It is anticipated that the ultra-thin model will include 8GB of RAM and a single 48MP rear camera.

A 48MP telephoto camera and up to 12GB of RAM are reportedly included with the Pro variants.

Apple’s strategy to reduce dependence on China

As part of a broader plan to lessen its reliance on China for premium iPhone models, Apple has decided to develop the iPhone 17 in India.

In an effort to decrease dependency and save money, the firm has pressured suppliers to move part of their factories to India.

This is a significant change in Apple’s production approach as the company is creating a new iPhone outside of China for the first time.
