Photo editing has become a common way to enhance our images, whether through simple adjustments like cropping or more advanced changes such as removing distractions, fine-tuning lighting, or even reimagining compositions. Tasks that once demanded significant time and skill have been transformed by AI-driven tools, like Magic Editor and Magic Eraser in Google Photos, which make complex edits far more accessible.
As Google expands the availability of these AI editing tools, they are committed to doing so thoughtfully, guided by their established AI Principles. To promote transparency, Google Photos is introducing a new feature next week that will make it easier for users to recognize when AI tools have been used on photos. Edited images will display a clear indication in the Photos app, revealing the presence of Google AI enhancements.
Currently, edits made with tools such as Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, and Zoom Enhance are embedded with metadata based on standards set by the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC). This metadata marks the images as having been modified by generative AI. Google is taking transparency a step further by making this AI-edit information visible alongside the usual photo details like file name, location, and backup status in the Photos app.
Moreover, Google will extend IPTC metadata use to flag instances when images are created by blending elements from different photos, even if non-generative features are used. For example, the Best Take feature on Pixel 8 and Pixel 9, as well as the Add Me feature on Pixel 9, combine images captured within a close timeframe to produce group photos with enhanced expressions and positioning.
This initiative is part of Google’s ongoing effort to bring clarity and transparency to AI-powered edits. Feedback will continue to be a priority as Google evaluates ways to further improve visibility around AI-assisted enhancements, aiming to keep users informed while helping them make the most of their photo editing experience.
