Next Easter, the King of Kings is going to rise.
The religious animated film’s North American rights have been purchased by Blue Harbour Entertainment, which plans to open it in theatres over the Easter vacation.
The film is partially based on Charles Dickens’ posthumously published short story “The Life of Our Lord,” which centres on the life and times of Jesus Christ. Oscar Isaac plays Jesus, and Kenneth Branagh plays Dickens. In addition, Ben Kingsley, Pierce Brosnan, Roman Griffin Davis, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, and Forest Whitaker provide voiceovers.
The main plot is around Dickens’s multifaceted journey with his son Walter. In the process, “the master storyteller engages his youngest son’s vivid imagination with the fascinating life of Jesus, his well-known trials and tribulations, and his notable colleagues and foes,” as stated in the logline.
The King of Kings is directed by Seong-ho “Jay” Jang and is produced by Mofac Animation, an animation studio located in South Korea.
Part of the reason faith-based films have done well at the box office is that their viewers are driven to watch them. Sound of Freedom was published by Angel Studios, which uses a pay-it-forward system whereby customers can purchase tickets for other people.
Jang explains that Blue Harbour “proved to understand the intrinsic value of this film and its faith-based engagement opportunities, and offered a creative, filmmaker-friendly business model that would provide significant outreach to families, animation fans, and the awaiting embrace of hundreds of millions of Christians across the nation.”
Blue Harbour is a distributor and has supported the documentaries Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street and The Herricanes, which is about a women’s full tackle football league from the 1970s.
Rob Edwards and Jang co-wrote King of Kings (The Princess and the Frog). Producer Anfernee Kim (Last Knights) is involved. Executive producers are seasoned movie executive Andrew Mann (Gold) and voice and casting director Jamie Thomason (Spirited Away).
