After two strong months of release, 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is now playing in just 700 domestic theatres and has brought in a staggering amount of money worldwide at the box office. When big hits like Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Inside Out 2 arrived, the film held its own for a few weeks during an exceptionally challenging summer box office season, thanks to its unexpectedly strong May launch. The digital premiere of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is scheduled for July 9; however, its global box office receipts may not quite reach a significant milestone.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has made over $220 million in foreign markets and close to $170 million in domestic revenue as of this past weekend, for a total global revenue of $391 million. With a strong domestic opening weekend gross of $58 million, the film had a number of strong holds over the following few months. It actually had a 2% increase in weekend six, when it surpassed War for the Planet of the Apes to become the third-biggest American box office film of the reboot series.
The Planet of the Apes Reboot Movies Have Grossed Over $2 Billion Worldwide
Filmmaker Tim Burton revived the Planet of the Apes property in the early 2000s, with varying degrees of success. The original series started in the 1960s. In 2011, the franchise was revived once more with the global box office success of Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. After taking over the franchise, director Matt Reeves produced two of the most critically acclaimed contemporary blockbusters, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes, which brought in $710 million and $490 million, respectively, on a global scale. Even though Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has surpassed War in the United States, it is remains the reboot series’ lowest-grossing film worldwide.
And it appears that’s where it will probably stay. Despite having a reputed $160 million budget, the film is regarded as a legitimate hit. This demonstrates the extent to which the post-pandemic landscape has altered; not that long ago, films with similar budgets, such as Warcraft and Pacific Rim, were viewed as underachievers despite bringing in over $400 million apiece worldwide. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which is helmed by Wes Ball, is anticipated to usher in a new trilogy of films set hundreds of years after the events of the reboot trilogy.
