The Street Fighter Reboot Movie Is Set for Release in 2026

The Street Fighter video game brand was taken to the big screen by Universal thirty years ago. The film starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, Kylie Minogue, and the late Raul Julia in the key roles. 2009 saw the return of the franchise from 20th Century Fox with Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, starring Kristin Kreuk in the lead role. The release date for Legendary and Sony Pictures’ adaptation of Street Fighter has now been announced.

According to information obtained by GameSpot, the anticipated Street Fighter remake will launch on March 20, 2026. Considering that Danny and Michael Philippou, the directors of Street Fighter, were fired a little more than a week ago, the studios’ decision is incredibly bold. The Talk To Me directors are said to have quit the project due to a dispute with Sony and Legendary on the timeline for the film’s development. Although the Philippou brothers already had a horror movie planned, the studios want it sooner. To meet that deadline, a new director or directors will need to be appointed soon.

In 1987, Capcom’s Street Fighter had its arcade premiere. Players first encountered Ryu and Ken, two series staples, in the game. However, it wasn’t until 1991’s Street Fighter II that the video games took off worldwide. Chun-Li, Guile, and other fan favourites were introduced in that title. Capcom has since released a number of sequels, the most recent of which being Street Fighter 6.

The Street Fighter franchise has produced animated films, an anime TV series, and an American cartoon in addition to the two live-action films. As of right now, it’s unclear if the Street Fighter film from Sony and Legendary will draw inspiration from the more recent sequels or from the early games in the series.
