Neeraj Chopra Wins the Gold Medal in the Men’s Javelin Throw Competition At The Paavo Nurmi Games

Reigning Olympic javelin throw champion Neeraj Chopra won gold in the 2024 Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, on Tuesday. Chopra had been out of competition for a month due to a niggle. Neeraj led the competition for the most of Tuesday’s event and concluded with a best throw of 85.97 metres on his third try.

Max Dehning, a 19-year-old German, competed as well. In February, he became the youngest person to clear the 90-meter mark. Neeraj, however, outperformed his own mark from 2022, the year he took home a silver medal. With a score of 79.84m, Max, however, placed seventh out of eight competitors.

With a career best throw of 84.19 metres, home favourite Toni Keranen won the silver medal. Oliver Helander, a fellow countryman and 2022 gold champion, finished third with 83.96 metres.

No one could surpass Chopra’s opening throw of 83.62 metres in the first round of competition. Helander won the first round with a throw of 83.96 metres, but Chopra quickly overthrew him with an unbeaten 85.97 metres in the second round.
