The historical picture “Zhambyl. A New Era,” which began filming in 2021 to honour Kazakh poet Zhambyl Zhabayev’s 175th birthday, will be released on June 6, according to the Culture and Information Ministry’s press department. Recently, Astana hosted the film’s world premiere.
The last nine years of the renowned poet’s life, when he had a lasting impact on Kazakh literary history, are chronicled in the film. It highlights important occasions that impacted his life, such as a gathering of traditional Kazakh poets known as akyns, his poems being published in periodicals and newspapers, and his contacts with notable people of the time like Saken Seifullin and Oraz Zhandosov.
The film, according to director Zhandos Kussainov, is based on real events that were discovered in Moscow archives. The utilisation of material kept by Joseph Gilman’s grandson, who collaborated with Zhabayev, in the film is what makes it so compelling.
“The name of Zhambyl is overgrown with many unreliable myths and I really wanted to portray a true image of the great akyn. To immerse myself in that era and uncover real facts, I studied documents and books written by contemporaries. At the same time, I was not shooting a documentary film, I reserved the right to artistic truth, not just historical truth,” Kussainov explained.
Doszhan Zhanbotayev, an actor, plays the main part. Along with these actors, the cast includes Almas Shayakhmetov, Yerik Zholzhaksynov, Farhod Maxmudov, Philip Voloshin, Assylbek Aitish, Anna Starchenko, and Assan Mazhit.
