Thursday night at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field, No. 18 LSU broke up a scoreless game with a six-run third inning. The Tigers went on to defeat sixth-ranked Vanderbilt 10-6.
Game 2 of the series between the clubs takes place on Friday at 7 p.m. at Skip Bertman Field, Alex Box Stadium. The game on Friday night will be shown on the SEC Network and the LSU Sports Radio Network.
Josh Pearson of LSU, a rightfielder, opened the game on Thursday with his fifth home run of the year, leaving it 0-0 going into the bottom of the third. In addition, shortstop Michael Braswell III’s RBI groundout, catcher Brady Neal’s two-run single, and third baseman Tommy White’s RBI single all highlighted the inning.
With a solo home run by leftfielder Mac Bingham (his ninth of the season) and a two-run single by designated hitter Hayden Travinski in the fourth, the Tigers led 9-0.
Luke Holman (6-1) received the victory for LSU after pitching 5.2 innings and giving up four earned runs on four hits, no walks, and ten strikeouts. Before allowing a Vanderbilt hitter to reach base, he tossed 4.1 perfect innings.
Pitcher Gryphon Herring pitched the final 3.1 innings with no runs, three hits, one walk, and six strikeouts to record his third save. Herring supplied solid relief.
“It was a good performance by our team,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “It starts on the mound — Luke did a great job again and Griffin came in and picked him up. They combined for 16 strikeouts, so we only had to make 11 defensive plays, and I like those kind of games.”
“Offensively, we had a really good inning there in the third and earned a win over a very good pitcher who nearly threw a complete game for Vanderbilt last week.”
Greysen Carter (3-1) of Vanderbilt was given the loss after giving up nine runs (seven earned) on seven hits in 3.2 innings while also walking three and striking out two batters.
The Commodores led 4–0 in the fifth inning thanks to a three-run home run by Vanderbilt shortstop Jonathan Vastine. They added 2 more runs in the sixth inning after LSU committed a mistake.
