Google Photos has joined the trend with its “2024 Recap,” a feature that curates significant moments, memories, and insights from the past year. This feature provides a reflective journey through users’ photos, now enhanced with optional AI-generated captions.
Available to select users in the U.S., this new functionality lets those who’ve enabled AI features in Google Photos personalize their images with captions crafted by Google’s Gemini AI model. These captions aim to spotlight the two most significant events from the year, such as major trips, celebrations, or other memorable milestones.
The 2024 Recap also includes sharable content beyond just photos. Users can see personalized statistics, like the total number of photos and videos taken throughout the year and the amount of footage that adds up to, allowing for easy sharing on social platforms.
That said, the concept of annual photo recaps comes with its complexities. While they often highlight joyful moments, they may also bring back memories of life’s challenges. For example, one user shared that Google Photos reminded them of a house fire earlier in the year—a moment they’d rather forget. Similarly, others may be reminded of bittersweet or painful events, like time spent with a lost loved one or photos with an ex. Unfortunately, AI isn’t yet advanced enough to discern which memories users may wish to avoid.
For those who experienced a positive year, however, the 2024 Recap offers an engaging way to revisit cherished memories and share them with loved ones.
This feature is now being rolled out to Google Photos users. Notifications will alert users when their personalized recap is ready. To access the AI captions, users should ensure they’ve opted in to using Google’s Gemini AI in the Photos app.
